The TCR UK championship reaches a pivotal point in its season as the category’s two-litre touring cars descend on Donington Park for a triple-header this weekend (8-9 August).
And while the likes of Max Hart, Callum Newsham and Jenson O’Neill-Going continue their battle for overall supremacy, they will be kept on their toes by a returning champion keen to show he remains the man to beat.
Sixteen-year-old star O’Neill-Going continues to lead the way in the championship standings after the Power Maxed Racing driver scored a second win of the season aboard his Honda Civic Type R FL5 last time out.
But the teen sensation now has international racer Hart (ALM Motorsport/Hall’s Racing Honda) breathing down his neck, just 12 points off the summit. Irishman Hart, who is contesting a dual campaign in the UK and Europe, was the top-scorer at Snetterton last month as he picked up a somewhat overdue first win of the season.
Newsham (JH Racing Hyundai Elantra N) is just three points further back. Snetterton was the first meeting this year at which the Hampshire-based Scot had not won a race but he maintains a perfect record in qualifying with three out of three pole positions. Newsham was also a winner on the 1.96-mile National circuit last year.
The three leading title protagonists will face increased competition this weekend with the return of 2025 champion Adam Shepherd. On a summer break from his TCR Europe campaign, Shepherd is set for an outing aboard a Vannin Motorsport-run Audi RS3 LMS, which has very similar underpinnings to the CUPRA Leon machinery he is most familiar with. Shepherd is a four-time TCR UK winner at Donington and will provide a tough benchmark for the current crop of UK pacesetters to test themselves against.
Don’t count out those who currently lie outside the top three in the points. Max Hall (Hall’s Racing Honda) is already a race winner this year, while two-time champion Carl Boardley (CBM with SVG Motorsport Honda) and Brad Hutchison (MPHR with Capture Motorsport CUPR Leon VZ) have multiple podiums to their names in 2026. All three had strong weekends last time out and are building momentum as they recover from lost ground earlier in the year.
Prizes are not confined to the overall TCR UK championship, with two sub-classes offering further incentives to those not in contention for the main title.
The Tom Walker Trophy, for rookies and others with limited prior TCR experience, is actually led by overall pacesetter Jenson O’Neill-Going, which just underlines how impressive his first full campaign has been. Leading the chase are long-time Irish tin-top racer Rod McGovern (Power Maxed Racing CUPRA) and rising star Harry Bloor (DT Racing Developments Honda). Bloor recorded his best-yet qualifying position of third overall last time out, proving he has the pace to run right at the sharp end when everything falls into place.
McGovern holds sway in the Goodyear Diamond Award, for drivers aged 40 and over. His closest challenger is currently Mark Smith (Capture Motorsport CUPRA). But expect third-placed Rick Kerry (EDF Motorsport Hyundai i30 N) to make up ground after having to miss a round earlier this season and suffering misfortune at his home circuit last time out. Irishman Barry-John McHenry (Vannin Motorsport Audi) and JH Racing’s Russell Joyce (Audi) are in a similar position.
After qualifying on Saturday (8 August), Sunday’s (9 August) bumper day of action features all three of this weekend’s races. Round 8 of the championship gets underway at 0915hrs. Round 9 brings the frenetic action of a reversed-grid race and is scheduled to start at 1225hrs. The day concludes with Round 10, for which lights out is timetabled for 1555hrs.
TCR UK’s feeder series, Civic Cup and Audi Cup, are also on the bill, as is the ever-popular British Truck Racing Championship. So it’s well worth getting yourself trackside at the popular East Midlands venue if you can.
