Driving a JW Bird Motorsport-run CUPRA Leon Competición, Matthew Wilson will embark on his first season in TCR UK this year.

It will also be the first time the latest incarnation of the CUPRA TCR will make an appearance in the Championship, Wilson choosing the newest version of the car due to the performances it has already delivered in TCR Series globally, taking race wins in regional, national and international status events.

In what will be his seventh season of competition in the UK, the former Volkswagen Racing Cup driver feels that 2022 is the right time to make his move into the TCR UK Championship:

“After racing for the past six years in single-make saloon car series, it’s time for a new challenge. Having watched the rapid growth of the Championship in 2021, I believe we’re joining the TCR UK ranks at just the right time and it looks like it’s the perfect next step.

“I’m pleased that with JW Bird Motorsport we’re the first team to bring the new CUPRA Leon Competición to the Championship. I’m therefore looking forward to putting the car through its paces during our pre-season tests.

“It’s shaping up to be to be an exciting season with a new car, a new championship and a new challenge ahead.”

Wilson’s debut in TCR UK is supported by renowned motor racing team Motorbase Performance as part of their newly launched Young Driver Programme.

The Wrotham-based squad has established a ladder of progression which can take drivers all the way from the junior levels of karting and up into touring cars. Partnering with JWB Motorsport, Wilson is part of the programme that enables drivers to graduate from karts to further up in the ranks of British motorsport.
