Will Powell becomes the first driver to be confirmed for the 2024 TCR UK Touring Car Championship during this year’s Autosport International Show at the NEC in Birmingham.
Powell returns to the championship where he will drive a Honda Civic Type R FK7 TCR run under the Sport 77 team banner in a full-season campaign.
The car is already on display, in its new livery. You can view the car in all its glory in Hall 3 on Stand 3650, the TCR UK stand, across all four days of the show.
The new team has joined forces with Bert Taylor and JAS Motorsport, the authorised agent for supplying the Honda Civic Type R TCR machines since the TCR category began in 2015, who are integral partners in the new operation.
The team aims to build on Taylor’s previous success in the TCR UK Touring Car Championship, the goal from Powell is to hit the ground running ahead of the new season, with a testing programme already set to begin in February.
Powell and Sport 77 are working closely with JAS Motorsport, with talks already underway to bring the newer FL5 model back to the championship, having made its global TCR competition debut in TCR UK last year at Snetterton.
Another integral part of the team is renowned race engineer Sean Hurley, who returns to work with Powell and rebuild their long-standing successful partnership, which has seen success in previous championships.
Powell is excited to be able to start this new chapter in TCR UK, which as a championship, has moved forward since his last appearance in 2021.
“It’s great to be able to confirm my entry with the Honda Civic Type R FK7 TCR for the 2024 season and a new team identity with Sport77. TCR UK as championship has made big strides forward in recent seasons and I’m ready to take part in what looks like its most competitive season so far,” explained Powell.
“As a team we are very excited to be the latest addition to the TCR UK grid in 2024, working with Bert Taylor who has been key to creating the opportunity and becoming part of the JAS Motorsport Family. Having Sean on board adds to the talent we have, which will give us a positive start to the new season as we prepare the FK7 to go racing.”
“Along with my partners, who have stuck with me through thick and thin, I’d also like to thank Stewart Lines for his persistent support to bring us back to TCR!”
Championship Promoter Stewart Lines is excited to see Will return to the TCR UK Touring Car Championship for the 2024 season.
“It’s great to see ex BTCC driver Will Powell return to TCR UK for the 2024 season. Having spent the last two years in the BTCC, Will’s decision to come back to the championship is a welcome sign for the series and we wish him well for 2024.”
Additional drivers are expected to join the outfit for the 2024 season, with details to be confirmed at a later date.
Will’s entry is supported by: My Car Direct, Autobrite Direct, Fewkes Sports Management, Good Year, J.A.S Motorsport and Hurley Race Engineering.
